Blood Pressure / Hypertension

Blood pressure is the result of two forces. One is created by the as it pushes blood into the arteries and through the circulatory system. The other is the force of the arteries as they resist the blood flow. About 10 percent of the adult population is known to have high blood pressure or hypertension. But there are many who have high blood pressure and do not know it.

Coronary Heart Disease

Arteriosclerosis is a general term for the thickening and hardening of the arteries. A type of arteriosclerosis is atherosclerosis. As well as being stiff, the walls of the arteries have a build-up of plaque – a combination of cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium and fibrin (a clotting material in the blood). New plaque tends to be soft, but is prone to rupturing. Plaque rupture can trigger the formation of a blood clot. Old plaque tends to have a lot of calcium and to be hard, which makes it somewhat less likely to rupture.

Arrhythmias

Arrhythmias or dysrhythmias are abnormal rhythms of the heart. Arrhythmias cause symptoms such as palpitations or dizziness and can cause the heart to pump less effectively. Treatment may include medications, a pacemaker, an implantable defibrillator or surgery.

Congestive Heart Failure

Congestive heart failure (or heart failure) is a condition in which the heart muscle is unable to pump enough blood to meet the needs of the body. When a specific cause of congestive heart failure is discovered, it should be treated or, if possible, corrected. Most cases of mild and moderate congestive heart failure are treatable. With proper medical supervision, people with heart failure don’t have to become invalids.

Angina

Angina or Angina Pectoris is medical term for the chest pain or the discomfort due to coronary artery disease. Unless you are under treatment for angina and have medications to take, all chest pain should be treated as a medical emergency. Tell someone you have chest pain and immediately seek medical attention.

Heart Attack

The medical term for heart attack is myocardial infarction. A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle itself (the myocardium) is severely reduced or stopped. This results in an area of dead tissue – the infarct or area of infarction.
